RGB vs CMYK for Book Files: What Should Authors Send to Print?

A cover can look luminous on a laptop and unexpectedly muted on paper. That does not automatically mean the printer failed. Screens and printing presses build colour in different ways, and the route from artwork to ink includes profiles, conversions, paper and device limits. Authors need to manage that route instead of choosing RGB or CMYK from a slogan.

The practical rule is simple: keep a controlled master file, ask the printer for the exact current specification, prepare a delivery file for that workflow, and inspect a proof. One universal export is rarely the safest answer for print, ebook stores, social graphics and advertising.

The short answer

RGB is primarily a screen-oriented colour model based on red, green and blue light. CMYK is a print-oriented model based on cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks. Yet the correct upload depends on the printer: some want a defined CMYK file, while some digital platforms accept RGB and perform conversion inside their production system.

Do not convert simply because the book will be printed. Confirm the destination's instructions, including accepted profiles and PDF settings. A conversion performed twice, or with the wrong profile, can be worse than sending a well-prepared RGB file to a workflow designed to convert it.


Why screen colour and printed colour differ

A monitor creates colour by emitting light. Paper reflects surrounding light after ink absorbs part of the spectrum. This physical difference means a screen can display intense blues, greens and luminous colours that ordinary process inks cannot reproduce.

Monitor brightness also misleads. A display set very bright can make shadow detail, contrast and saturation look stronger than the print. The surrounding room light changes perception too, which is why professional colour decisions use controlled viewing conditions.

Paper is part of the image. Uncoated stock absorbs ink and usually appears softer than a bright coated sheet. Cream paper changes the apparent white point. A matte laminate can lower perceived contrast compared with a glossy surface. Colour mode is only one variable.


What RGB actually means

RGB describes colour values relative to a profile. sRGB, Adobe RGB and other spaces do not represent identical ranges. An image without reliable profile information leaves the next application to guess how those numbers should appear.

For websites, retailer marketing covers and many ebook assets, sRGB is commonly requested because it is broadly supported on consumer screens. Amazon's current marketing-cover guidance specifies RGB for that image, while print cover and interior requirements must be checked separately.

A designer should avoid treating an ebook cover JPEG as the production master for a printed wrap. The print edition also needs correct physical dimensions, bleed, resolution and spine geometry.


What CMYK actually means

CMYK values describe combinations of printing inks, but the same percentages can reproduce differently on different presses and papers. A CMYK file is therefore not automatically press-ready. Its profile and the printer's intended condition matter.

Converting to CMYK maps colours that the destination cannot reproduce into its available gamut. The choices made during that mapping affect saturated colours, dark areas and neutrals. A profile chosen for one paper or region may be inappropriate for another.

Rich black, total ink coverage and small black text also require production judgment. Excess ink can create drying or registration problems, while delicate text built from several colours can show fringes if plates or channels shift.


Ask the printer these questions

  • Which colour space and ICC profile should the cover use?

  • Are interior images handled differently from cover artwork?

  • What PDF standard, resolution and ink limits are required?

  • Does the platform convert RGB automatically, and can that conversion be previewed?

  • What proof options are available before the production run?

  • Which variations in colour are considered normal?

Save the written specification with the project. Platform instructions can change, and a file prepared for one supplier should not be assumed correct for another.


Build a clean master-to-output workflow

Keep artwork in an editable master with high-resolution linked images and known profiles. Make non-destructive adjustments where possible. From that master, export separate files for the print cover, print interior, ebook cover, web store and social use.

Name each output with its destination and revision. Avoid opening a compressed retailer JPEG, converting it again and using it for print. Repeated conversions and resizing can reduce quality and make colour history difficult to trace.

If more than one printer will manufacture the edition, request specifications from each. The artwork may remain consistent while delivery files differ.


Soft proofing helps, but it is not the final proof

Soft proofing simulates a destination profile on a calibrated monitor. It can reveal out-of-gamut colours, lost shadow detail and unexpected shifts before export. It cannot reproduce paper texture, ink density, laminate, binding or every device variation.

A calibrated display improves consistency, but calibration does not expand the printer's gamut. It helps the screen tell the truth about what is possible. Use gamut warnings as a diagnostic tool, then adjust only the colours that matter.

For a colour-critical book, a physical proof is the stronger decision point. View it under suitable light and compare important images across pages rather than judging one isolated colour patch.


Protect skin tones, brand colours and dark detail

Readers notice unnatural skin tones quickly. Check faces at print size and avoid global corrections that repair one image while damaging another. Photographs from different sources may need individual preparation.

Brand colours require tolerance, not wishful certainty. If a specific colour is commercially important, discuss measurable targets and special inks with the printer. Process CMYK and digital devices may not match a luminous screen colour exactly.

Dark photographs often lose separation when printed. Inspect hair, clothing and shadow areas during proofing. Raising every shadow can flatten the image, so preserve intentional depth while keeping essential detail.


Colour interiors need an economic check too

Choosing a colour interior affects far more than appearance. Manufacturing cost can change list-price flexibility and retailer margin. Some books need colour for meaning; others use it decoratively and may work better with a carefully designed black-and-white interior.

Decide whether each image requires colour to communicate. Charts can use patterns, labels and contrast as well as hue. Photographs may need captions that remain understandable for readers with colour-vision differences.

A premium colour option should serve the reader and the book's positioning. Do not select it solely because the screen artwork is attractive.

They still need careful handling. Images may contain unintended colour data, and grey balance, contrast and black generation affect reproduction. Follow the printer's grayscale or black-only specifications instead of assuming desaturation is sufficient.


What files should an author keep after production?
